The APA Website Sucks

Why does the website for the American Philosophical Association suck like a black hole? Why can't they find someone who can properly maintain a webpage? Why is the information so clumsily organized and hard to find? Note how the online submissions for the Central have been closed for more than a week, but there's still no link for online submission to the Pacific (despite a Sept 1 deadline)!

Compare the pages for any comparable professional academic organization, such as APSA.

They are apparently about to unveil a new APA website. Guess what? It sucks too.

You would think that by having an a priori grasp on the form of the good, philosophers would make kick-ass web designers. And snappy dressers, too.

Then there's the other APA. And not the one with the skull fuckers. I'm talkin' about the Amalgamated Printer's Association. People you would have thought could be expected to have a firm grasp on fonts and layouts.

Oh yes, the "other" APA website sucks too! Another favourite of mine in that regard is the NY Bookbinders Guild which should be an amazing website considering the amount of talent and supposed technical savvy in the guild. Nope, it sucks too! http://www.bookbindersguild.org/
I feel your pain.

I thought WE were the skull fuckers! Oh... I see what you mean. They're the control-obsessed skull fuckers. Fuck them.

The AP(rinter)A is hilarious. I am going to submit an application.

Santa:

Will check out the bookbinder guild.

That's hysterically funny and pathetic. The *new* site is pretty much the same old one, made less attractive, and equally (if not more) clumsily organized. At least we can be sure about what our dues are *not paying for*. When will they move to a pdf format for all the proceedings, etc. they send? (SAGP changed to that format and kept dues at $10 a year.)

Agreed: the new site keeps all of the badness of the old, and introduces only new badness. A net loss of functionality. And it was designed (sic) by a professional development company. What bullshit.

So they are, in fact, wasting our dues on it. What a shame.

Yes!

Wow, did Evelyn Brister capture my shame, over at Knowledge and Experience:

Fuck apa formatting. You should just be able to put a Superscript number and then the appropriate corresponding reference at the end.

APA is confusing for most people and no websites cover how to correctly format documents. The only reason apa is placed as a restriction and hindrance for Universities and colleges is the fact that it places an obstacle for average people who have never worked with that formatting before. You don't have to be smart to understand it, or stupid not to get how to do it; apa formatting is a waste of time and it pisses people off.
