I take it that the CPD was a bit less ... uh ... unaccommodating than it has been at previous large political gatherings in Grant Park?
An "on the job" friend of mine told me that to celebrate the Democratic convention's return to Chicago in '96 an enterprising cop was selling t-shirts that read, "28 years ago we kicked your father's ass, now it's your turn" -- until some higher-ups got wind of it and squelched the entrepreneurial spirit...
The cops were out in force, but they were mostly just hanging back. I saw no police interventions the entire night. I also saw nothing that would call for intervention.
BTW: Is it shabby of me to have expected *some* antagonistic element (skinheads, for example) to be in attendance? I saw nothing like this-- and I was looking, too.
Observations from an old cranky jerk who happens to be a professional philosopher. Occasionally philosophical, most often just vulgar. Sometimes focused on sober points of logic and issues in political theory, but more frequently fixed on nonsense. Bad metal bands, crappy guitarists, stupid lyrics, celebrities, pop "culture," telemarketers, irrationality, and other annoyances. Always misanthropic. Anti-religious. Not particularly amusing, either. Some might say insulting. Strange mail. Kook magnet. Doom. Comments from other cranky jerks, young and old.

Spiros:
I don't think that's "shabby" at all. Indeed, it's spirosian. I'd've expected nothing less, given the kind of cranky jerk you are...
