APA: More Fuckedupness

The APA has done it again. Yes, the organization is a fucking disaster. Yes, the new website still sucks. But this takes the cake. Consider the following facts:

a) The 2009 Central APA takes place on Feb 18-22 in Chicago.

b) The next issue of Jobs for Philosophers publishes on February 21.

What's the impact of this on the job market? Looks like no job interviews at the Central!

Merry Christmas, all you young philosophers seeking jobs in Philosophy!

Would someone please dismantle the APA and start a new national organization that's not such an embarrassment to us all?

I guess this means departments should either advertise in the JFP web ads, or interview at the Pacific. But I agree that this is a ridiculous fuckup.

Absolutely nuts!

This seems like the right place to also mention that the brilliant people running the APA never thought to move up the publication date for the central meeting program.

Speaking of the APA, the line for placement "service" was about an hour and a half long last night. You'd think they would have brought more than two people!

The APA administration really needs to run the conferences better, but I have to say that I saw some terrific papers. The infrastructure is sound to the discipline, we just need better organization.

But there are never really any interviews at the Central anyway. It has always seemed to me to be one of the rational things about our profession that we had one annual timetable for substantive jobs: Ads in the Fall, interviews at the Eastern, flyouts in early Spring. Compare this to other disciplines that have no meeting to serve as the central job clearing house and so have searches occuring higgledy-piggledy throughout the year.

Anon 2:11 is correct: there's never more than a dozen departments interviewing at the Central APA (and maybe a half-dozen at the Pacific APA). For that matter, the February JFP is also pretty slim pickings. Before blaming the APA I'd get your facts straight.

Apropos of complaints:I never cease to be amazed at the 20 odd people standing in line to register at the APA, while the line for pre-registration never has more than a person or two. Is that also the APA's fault--that people can't be expected to send in their registration a couple of weeks beforehand?

3:11 anon- the pre-registration line this year was as long or longer than the other lines, at least on the first day. It was of no apparent advantage to pre-register, it seemed.

A more sensible solution would be to have all registration be on-line, including payment, then on-site just split things up by last name to give out name-badges, etc.

As for the Central, it's true that there are usually few interviews there, and this year there will likely be less. But in the past it was possible to advertise in JFP and have an interview there. The time for the central was recently changed but the publishing schedule for JFP wasn't.

You advise me to get my "facts straight," but then offer no correction of fact. Wow!

Here's a fact: No matter how few departments interview at the Central typically, there will be fewer departments interviewing there in 2009. And here's another fact: Any department that was hoping to conduct interviews at the Central is now unable to.

Here's a tip for you: before treating me as your pupil, try making sure you're not a moron.

The pre-registration line on Sunday morning was very fast. You just picked up your name badge and program, so the line moved quickly.

In the past, the program distributed at meetings was a slightly revised version of the Proceedings, with the meeting program and rooms. This time you just got a copy of the Proceedings with a xeroxed sheet showing room numbers. This seems more efficient and probably saved a little money. People who didn't register didn't get the sheet with room numbers(and there seen to be quite a few free-loaders among the employed philosophers in attendance).

Just a few years ago, Central was held in late April and APA didn't have many web ads, but the job market seemed to muddle through anyway. The print JFP in February has very few new tenure-track listings for the coming fall. If departments miss the deadlines for the October and November JFPs, then the web ads are a good alternative for last minute recruitments and seem to meet the needs of those who want to do February interviews in Chicago.

I think this is more of a problem than you're allowing. Consider: There is a question at many institutions concerning whether the "web only" ads meet EEO requirements (this is why so many "web only" ads wind up in the print JFP anyway). A department with a TT position (perhaps one that had been canceled for the Eastern and is now re-opened) will likely have to wait until the Pacific.

Bottom line: Typically there are three occasions on which people interview for jobs in philosophy. Now there's less than that. Any way you slice it, it's bad news for job seekers. And the APA fucked it up.

Um, of COURSE there's a ginormous line at the APA reg. Many grad students and Ph.D.s simply (1) can't well afford to travel to the APA, including the expensive hotel they pick, (2) don't really want to spend their winter holidays with other philosophy dorks, (3) would go ONLY if they had a job interview, and (4) aren't offered APA interviews until 1-2 weeks before the conference, i.e., after the pre-registration deadline.

But yes, there should be more APA staff during peak times and locations.

APA is way behind the times, and has been since I joined ....long ago. It should be possible for job seekers to register at the next to the last minute online.
