A Midsummer Night's APA Fuckedupness

I note that the APA website (which still fucking sucks, and now uses an old version of Java) indicates that the 2009 Pacific Division meeting will be held in December in New York.

That might explain why the site claims there's still time to submit papers for the Eastern Division meeting.

They nicely fucked up the Central ballots, too.

Can't wait to see the JFP/meeting coordination for next year. Oh wait, the "2000-2010" publication schedule conveniently ends in 2009!

Time to boycott?

Boycott? Philosophers don't have the courage. Now, an online petition? That's the ticket. Oh, the power of an online petition.

The threat of an on-line petition can make even the crustiest man quiver.

Not clear why boycotting the APA would require courage -- I've been doing it for years. Or maybe, just maybe, I'm the bravest man in the world.

Hiring committees should replace the Eastern APA interview cattle call with phone interviews and/or expanded flyouts. I'm pretty sure that significantly lessening the horde of job-seekers dumping cash into the APA's coffers would likely force the APA to productively remold itself into **gasp** an organisation largely devoted to the substantive aspects of the philosophy profession.

Why can't philosophy departments just start advertising in the Chronicle and do phone inteviews? Several top departments could announce that they were going to do this on Leiter's blog, and then shortly the whole world would know, and then all job applicants would start reading the Chronicle ads. Then I suspect that many other departments would follow suit. People on the search committees could then -- gasp -- spend Christmas time with their families. Isn't it just patently obvious that this is what should happen? Come on someone, make it happen!

There are people who like to spend time with their families? Weird.

Eastern APA in Times Square? Best idea ever!

Surely the job adverts could be done all online, with a standard format for ads that makes everything neatly organized (and searchable). The online JFP is a notorious mess. Someone with the know-how of your average kid in junior high could do the job. That kid could also design and build a better website in a weekend...
