What's with the Salinger comparisons in the linked piece?
"… the J.D. Salinger-esque rebellion against conformity in The Breakfast Club."
"As Hughes advanced into middle age, his commercial touch faded and, in Salinger style, he increasingly withdrew from public life."
I don't get it. But I'm even more perplexed by Ben Stein's comment: "I don't think anyone has come close to him as being the poet of the youth of America in the postwar period. He was to them what Shakespeare was to the Elizabethan Age."
Shakespeare? Is he fucking kidding? Can't moderately talented people die anymore without this kind of hyperbole?
Gowder: I respectfully disagree-- these films are worthless. But you're not alone in insisting that some of this films are great, so I've just posted a bit about *Sixteen Candles* (from the email I've gotten, the Hughes film his fans are most eager to defend).
Observations from an old cranky jerk who happens to be a professional philosopher. Occasionally philosophical, most often just vulgar. Sometimes focused on sober points of logic and issues in political theory, but more frequently fixed on nonsense. Bad metal bands, crappy guitarists, stupid lyrics, celebrities, pop "culture," telemarketers, irrationality, and other annoyances. Always misanthropic. Anti-religious. Not particularly amusing, either. Some might say insulting. Strange mail. Kook magnet. Doom. Comments from other cranky jerks, young and old.

Glaucon: You've hit the nail on the head.
