JFP: DOOM
I count at most 45 TT-jobs in the US in Philosophy at the Assistant Professor rank in the JfP.

Another relevant number to consider is the following. Last year on the day of publication of the October JFP (10/10/08) there were a total of 507 jobs posted in both the print and Web editions. This year that number is 256.
(Putting aside the fact that this is really depressing, the fact that it's almost exactly half is just weird.)
Did anyone else see that Duquesene is hiring a TT Continentalist? Do they really need another?
Imagine the faculty meeting, with resounding agreement: "Well, we have post-structuralist theories of consciousness and embodiment well-covered, but we have such a glaring weakness in early phenomenological accounts of anxiety. We can't be a serious department without that..."
"Did anyone else see that Duquesene is hiring a TT Continentalist? Do they really need another?"
Said as if there are not entire departments out there that lack a single continental philosopher.
Consider the whole Leiter top-20 for example. Even a number of the best institutions *for continental* according to Leiter don't really do continental.
I for one find it refreshing that there are departments out there that aim to buck this trend.
4:19- seriously! I knew I was crazy lucky last year to land a TT job, but seeing how bad the list year is almost brought tears of thankful joy to my eyes and made me catch religion. ZERO jobs in my area this year, too. Good Lord what a disaster.
How are you accessing the new JFP? When I log in to the member services part of the site, the link to the new JFP is "un-clickable" (however you put that).
Next time you wonder how grateful you should be for having a job...
I wish all tenure-track faculty felt that way. Ten bucks says that, for every job for which I apply, I'll be competing with candidates who currently have tenure track jobs.
12:59 pm: I think what you meant to say isn't that places like Chicago and Riverside "don't do continental," it's that they have *philosophers* doing continental as opposed to lit crit hacks.
Anon 12:55: I assume that you are running a tu quoque argument against my question when you respond: "Said as if there are not entire departments out there that lack a single continental philosopher." Two quick news flashes: 1. Tu quoque is a fallacy. Learn some logic. 2. The question you ask is not actually pointing out an inconsistency, as the failure of good departments to have specialists in some area or other is not inconsistent with it being egregious to turn departments into boutiques. So though you wield a fallacy, you cannot even wield it properly. Pathetic.
Finally, the fact you find this strategy of creating departments that give Ph.D.'s to students without training them to engage with the majority of the rest of the profession "refreshing" is indicative of the quality of your judgment.
As the accompanying article explains: Competition for tenure-track positions at four-year institutions is intense, but you'll find lots of available positions at community colleges and professional programs, where you can enter the professoriate as an adjunct faculty member or non-tenure track instructor without a doctorate degree. That's particularly true during economic downturns, when laid-off workers often head back to school for additional training.
Observations from an old cranky jerk who happens to be a professional philosopher. Occasionally philosophical, most often just vulgar. Sometimes focused on sober points of logic and issues in political theory, but more frequently fixed on nonsense. Bad metal bands, crappy guitarists, stupid lyrics, celebrities, pop "culture," telemarketers, irrationality, and other annoyances. Always misanthropic. Anti-religious. Not particularly amusing, either. Some might say insulting. Strange mail. Kook magnet. Doom. Comments from other cranky jerks, young and old.

"Bucking the trend"? Huh? Unbalanced department completely blind to one of the major philosophical traditions in the West. Same trend!

Just to make this season's job-seeking extra-special for everyone, College Professor has just ranked #3 on CNN Money's "Best Jobs in America".
