On the unusually long ride into campus this morning, I was horrified to find three radio stations simultaneously playing Billy Joel songs. Quickly, the horror turned to glee, as I inferred that Joel must have died. I got into my office and checked the facts. Sadly, Billy Joel is still alive.
What a crappy start to the weekend...

That is a tragedy!
Gonna have a heart attack-ack-ack-ack-ack . . .
You ought to know by now...
sounds like chapter 4 of 'Schopenhauer was right'.
my word verification phrase was 'cheoch', which is presumably the sound that emerges from one's mouth when they realize that they are hearing a Billy Joel song.

I guess Spiros is not a "downtown man."
Accident on the 6 line today, eh?
Where's that asteroid when you need it.

A great old Onion story:
Pop Stars To Consolidate.
While I grant that there are some terrible Billy Joel songs, there are also some very, very good ones. At his best, he encapsulates salient aspects of the spirit of a particular social class. —nothing to sneeze at, and an enviable contribution to society. Moreover, at his best, he can do this in a very natural, unaffected way, where music and lyrics seem organically intertwined. Listen to "Vienna":
