APA Refund

In case you're wondering.... look here.

Meeting Registration Refund

For Divisional meetings, attendees are able to register in advance or register on-site. The Pacific and Eastern Divisions have adopted a “no refund” policy for registrations. It should be noted that if a person is unsure if he is able to attend a meeting, he should wait to register on-site thereby eliminating the problem of having paid for registration and being unable to attend. The Central Division Secretary-Treasurer has the discretion to refund advance registration for a meeting to members who are prevented from attending by emergency circumstances.

This is also helpful:

The APA National Office will be closed for the holiday season from December 13, 2010 through January 3, 2011.

Wait-- what? Maybe this is the best they can do (?), but this policy really stings in conjunction with the new, higher rates* for on-site registrations. Especially for potential job-candidates.

*Or, in APA language, the new "discount" for pre-registration.

For how long will philosophers continue to let the APA be so crap? There at least needs to be some measure of how satisfied US philosophers are with the APA -- making an effort to include the opinions of the increasing numbers who have ceased their membership.

Is this exceptional? Last time I couldn't get to a concert because of snow it didn't cross my mind to ask for a refund. Sure rained-out games are an analogue, but that seems to be an exception--and what a hassle to reschedule for a double-header. Does the MLA refund? Do other organizations that sink costs into mounting major conferences?

Bah. Seems to be a lot more whinging around the APA than any other snow-affected community I'm plugged into right now. Shit happens, we'll all work around it.

Does the MLA refund?

Requests for refunds must be made in writing, accompanied by unused convention badges with receipt attached, and postmarked no later than 7 January. If you paid by credit card, please supply the credit card number and expiration date in your letter to expedite your refund. Mail requests for refunds to MLA Convention Office, Bowling Green Station, PO Box 107, New York, NY 10274-0107. A $10 service fee is deducted from all refunds.

I supposed you checked this before posting, right? ( http://www.mla.org/conv_registration )

Does the <a href="http://www.apaonline.org/divisions/meetingrefundpolicies.aspx”>Central APA offer refunds, at least sometimes?

Yeah...

You realize how much of a blowhard you're kinda coming off as--especially given above, Anon 10:23, right?

Have a drink, okay? Maybe some wine.

Sorry if I sounded like a blowhard, but Anon 12:36 seems to be taking the APA no refund position in the face of a massive snow storm to be implicitly part of the reason to hold that the APA is "such crap."

But, I guess I find the expectation of a refund more surprising than the lack of a refund.

Sometimes this sounds a bit like the dude yelling at the ticket counter to me. But, that isn't to invalidate that dude's feelings or troubles, of course. :)

I'll have that drink now. Cheers and safe travels.

If it is reasonable to expect a refund for conference registration when most flights to the conference city are canceled, then it's reasonable to count that as another strike against the APA. On the Leiter blog others have bundled in the issue of whether there should be APA job interviews in the first place. Of course, these questions can be made separate. Still, the quality of the APA services and wisdom of its decisions joins them.
