The Last Stone
Looks like The Stoneis going on hiatus. Hopefully a long one. Excepting today's boilerplate sign-off post by the current editor, the new year is already off to a good start...

Hooray: a post not about the APA or the job market!!!
Dear Spiros, I am recently tenured at a crap university. I now find philosophy completely unenjoyable. Is this a normal reaction after the tenure process? When I started this job, I couldn't wait to get up every morning to do more philosophy. Now I am totally sick of it. Avid Reader
There is a common period of post-tenure let-down - depression, anger, and so on. Suddenly, you are not focused on the great event; you can start to resent the torments you went through; you realize that you may be at this place for the rest of your career. Your are exhausted.
For most people, this passes. One of the great advantages of being an academic is that you can always retreat into love of your field, no matter how dumb or frustrating the rest of the work.
3:02--CTS is right. For most this does pass. It does help if you enjoy teaching as well as research, especially at your typical "crap university". But with dedication and diligence, you'd be surprised how rewarding a career it can be even on the rim of civilization. A lot of it really is up to you.
Well, they'll stone you and say that it's the end Then they'll stone you and then they'll come back again They'll stone you and the comments mostly suck And they'll stone you and you'll say what the fuck But I would not feel so all alone Everybody must get stoned
Observations from an old cranky jerk who happens to be a professional philosopher. Occasionally philosophical, most often just vulgar. Sometimes focused on sober points of logic and issues in political theory, but more frequently fixed on nonsense. Bad metal bands, crappy guitarists, stupid lyrics, celebrities, pop "culture," telemarketers, irrationality, and other annoyances. Always misanthropic. Anti-religious. Not particularly amusing, either. Some might say insulting. Strange mail. Kook magnet. Doom. Comments from other cranky jerks, young and old.

Quit. If you're going to work a job you hate, find one that pays better.

Give it some time.

Glaucon:
I'll save you the pain of quoting the lyrics of Neil Diamond's "Stones"--
but then again I suspect the damage is already done.
wv: fibsi, as in "I approve this message"
As a fellow companion of Socrates, let me just say: Glaucon FTW!
I have to say that if there were a prize on this blog for for Best Jerk Regular Commenter, it'd go to Glaucon.
Avid Reader here: thanks everyone for comments. You know this blog cheers me up. Thanks Spiros!
