Attendance was extremely poor. Sessions were poor too. The smoker was about a 10th of the size of the smoker at the Eastern. The job interviewing scene was the worst I have ever seen at the central. Hardly anything going on there at all.
It did seem very sparse. Interesting, since Minneapolis came in third in the Central poll about preferred meeting spots. I wonder if this will dissuade the Secretary from following polled preferences in the future.
Of course, St. Louis (#1) and New Orleans (#2) are already scheduled. Maybe those will be different -- I predict the New Orleans meeting will sell a lot of rooms but the *session* attendance will still seem low...
Any conference-related shortcomings were more than compensated for by the Hilton's proximity to Hell's Kitchen, which may well have the best porridge on the planet. That's right: porridge.
The city itself was quite lovely, and while I cannot speak for others, I attended some great sessions. Claudia Card's pres address was really good too.
Not only does Hell's Kitchen serve up a great breakfast (I prefer the huevos racheros, but it's the homemade peanut butter that really does it), so did Keys--in fact, the food was generally great in the area. And, perhaps thanks to the low conference attendance, there was little wait at the best nearby restaurants.
Was there something other than food sampling going on at the conference?
Minneapolis happened to be nice this weekend... sometimes it's just crappy and they predicted snow for Sunday, which didn't happen.
Personally, I didn't go --I had important hair washing and bathroom cleaning duties to accomplish... and, frankly, the program didn't look at all interesting.
On the whole the program wasn't great, but I found plenty of people in my area with whom I could talk and drink. In fact, the less-than-stellar program gave us the opportunity to do a lot of talking and drinking without feeling guilty! And that's really what I'm at the APA for. I can read these papers any time; I want conversation. And beer.
Observations from an old cranky jerk who happens to be a professional philosopher. Occasionally philosophical, most often just vulgar. Sometimes focused on sober points of logic and issues in political theory, but more frequently fixed on nonsense. Bad metal bands, crappy guitarists, stupid lyrics, celebrities, pop "culture," telemarketers, irrationality, and other annoyances. Always misanthropic. Anti-religious. Not particularly amusing, either. Some might say insulting. Strange mail. Kook magnet. Doom. Comments from other cranky jerks, young and old.

Attendence was very poor indeed, but the hotel is nice, and Minneapolis is gorgeous this time of year.
