Are these laws intended to govern all of the academy, as suggested by "Law of the Academy," or just philosophy departments, as it seems is presumed by most of the comments? (It seems to me they apply to the academy as a whole.....)
Observations from an old cranky jerk who happens to be a professional philosopher. Occasionally philosophical, most often just vulgar. Sometimes focused on sober points of logic and issues in political theory, but more frequently fixed on nonsense. Bad metal bands, crappy guitarists, stupid lyrics, celebrities, pop "culture," telemarketers, irrationality, and other annoyances. Always misanthropic. Anti-religious. Not particularly amusing, either. Some might say insulting. Strange mail. Kook magnet. Doom. Comments from other cranky jerks, young and old.

Every member of one's department ought to be able to teach critical thinking, and teach it well.
And here I thought ought implies can.
What I want to know is how the Law of the Academy numbering works.
If some member of your department can *not* teach critical thinking, then that member of your department should be in another department.
I used to think I could but thought better of it.
wv: pledisme; not guilty

New law of the academy: every cranky jerk thinks he can see all the flaws of everyone else while remaining completely blind to his dickishness.
Newish law of the academy: every cranky jerk thinks she can see all the flaws of everyone else while remaining completely blind to her vaginaishness.
Which puts "dickishness" to shame in a meta-way.
Just sayin'
Dude, Betty Ford's dead! What, no posse?!
