Abandon All Hope Now?

It's Wednesday at 3:00. Time to abandon all hope, right?

That some departments apparently wait this long to contact APA interviewees is appalling to me.

We've been trying to contact 3 candidates for 4 days now. Guess some of them don't even want interviews

Leave a message. I've been out of the country and can't have my phone on all the time.

3:37, Why not contact them through e-mail? Those are busy days, especially for people with families who will be going to the APA.

The APA makes the situation worse by holding the event at a hotel which requires 7 days advance notice to cancel for a full refund.

The non-APA "Marriott Rewards" rate is cheaper for all nights except for Thursday. The Omni, about one block away, is even cheaper. They both have 24hr cancellation policies. I booked my room yesterday.

The AAA rate was cheaper than the student rate as of early November, and it also had a 24-hour cancellation policy. Thank you, APA, for getting us such a GREAT DEAL on the hotel.

... because the AAA and the APA are the same size and hence have the same level of clout in such matters, right? Makes sense to me.

The APA doesn't have to be the size of AAA in order to secure a cancellation window of less than 7 days. Last year, in Boston you could cancel 24 hours prior to your scheduled check-in without incurring a penalty.

Seriously? The AAA rate is just a slight discount off rack rates offered to get an asterisk next to the hotel's name in their travel guides. If you're negotiating to place a conference in someone's hotel, guaranteeing occupancy for many rooms, you should be able to negotiate a better deal than that.
Are you trolling? (He asked, after taking the bait.)

Every APA division conference (that I have attended) at a Marriott in the past 10 years has had a 24 hour advance notice requirement to cancel. The Marriott convention people told me that the 7 days cancel part of the current Eastern convention was at the request of the APA, not Marriott. Although this may seem beyond belief (why in the world would the APA request that?), both past APA cancel policies at Marriotts around the country and also the general/radical incompetence of the APA seem to make this unfortunately within reasonable belief.

The hotel contracts are negotiated by each APA division, not by the national office, so you might direct your concerns to the appropriate division.

I don't know what the story is on the 7-day cancellation, but those contracts typically require a guarantee of a certain number of rooms, so it might be that the Division was worried they might fall short on that guarantee (perhaps based on past years?).

In many cases, it is very unclear whether hope should be abandoned now. If I know that some dept. is interviewing at the APA, and I have not heard from it at this point, then I will abandon hope. However, many departments don't make it clear whether or not they're interviewing at the APA. If I haven't heard from dept. A, but I don't know if A is doing APA, Skype, phone, or campus interviews, then I don't have much basis to abandon hope with respect to A (assuming the wiki hasn't already dashed my hopes).

I'm so bored with the APA. RIP Joe Strummer (8/21/52 – 12/22/02).
