Last year, a school called me three times in one day. Each time, I was busy with something I couldn't get out of. They left no message. They didn't e-mail. The only way I found out it was from a school was by looking up the phone number later -- if I hadn't had caller ID, I never would have known.
I'm really lucky I didn't need that job...
I'm not surprised that some schools would be so stupid as to either not use email or not leave messages. These are philosophers we're talking about, after all, so we all know that there's a larger percentage of them that, whatever their other virtues may be, are idiots about basic bits of dealing with others and normal parts of life.
On caller ID, last year I got a call during interview time from a number I didn't recognize. When I answered and said my name (it was my office phone), the caller said, "uh, sorry, wrong number and hung up." I looked up the number, and it was from a school I had been hoping to hear from. Who knows what the screw up was, but it was funny, as well as sad.

But, they have been sending emails.
I know it is fun to mock ourselves, but the mockery works best if it is founded on some facts.
CTS, I took 9:42 to be referring to the case of 8:46, in which email was not used.
