The stuff that's already on Leiter looks straightforwardly cribbed. But if it's going to be original content, awesome. Leiter is great, but the political commentary is as unnecessary as it superficial. It's weird, though, that nobody says who's running it.
It's not surprising that the person or persons running this wouldn't want to identify themselves. Just look at the ridiculous - and predictable - response from Leiter.
Do we need this? No. Do we need most of the philosophy blogs out there? No. But there's an audience for it. How big of one remains to be seen. I for one, though, will be visiting LR a lot less now.
I'd have thought they understood proper citation practices (especially on teh intarwebz), and would refrain from lifting content altogether. As a result, I'm not particularly put out by the letter, nor am I particularly sympathetic to those running ProPhil. I trust the lesson's been learned.
What kind of insecure anonymous asshat/douchebag would think that enforcing your legal right not to be ripped off is an example of asshattery/douchebaggery?
On the plus side, the new blog casts the net much more widely for philosophy-related links in cyberspace. On the down side, there's no editorial filtering going on, so average interest of the links seems lower.
Observations from an old cranky jerk who happens to be a professional philosopher. Occasionally philosophical, most often just vulgar. Sometimes focused on sober points of logic and issues in political theory, but more frequently fixed on nonsense. Bad metal bands, crappy guitarists, stupid lyrics, celebrities, pop "culture," telemarketers, irrationality, and other annoyances. Always misanthropic. Anti-religious. Not particularly amusing, either. Some might say insulting. Strange mail. Kook magnet. Doom. Comments from other cranky jerks, young and old.

The thousands of hits so far suggest a positive answer!
But how many of those are Leiter himself checking on the competition?
How about a link so I can make an informed smart ass comment?
PA: here.
well that didn't work. http://prophilosophy.wordpress.com
Maybe. There is a lot of stuff there not on Leiter.

Who is responsible for this blog?
I wouldn't call it a mimic. More like an alternative. A welcome one.
Def a mimic. pointless too.
yes plz
I like the lack of advertising and the lack of self-promotion on prophilosophy.
What is the problem with providing an alternative? Let a thousand flowers bloom...
maybe PA can eventually get plugs on this one too!!!!!

The best part is that someone (guess who) sent ProPhilosophy a cease-and-desist letter.

Probably worried that people will stop reading his (or her) blog once another option w/out obnoxious rants is available.

Straight philosophy news without bullshit political punditry and terrible poetry? Yes please.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA C&D letter for stealing philosophy news on a blog, that's awesome!
I like the fact that prophilosophy is anonymous.
Prophilosophy is written by our very own anonymous.
Spiros runs it
There's going to be a hot blog battle this summer, with Leiter posting phil-porn in order to win back readers.
The prophilosophy blog is awesome!
But what kind of insecure douchebag/ asshat would actually send a cease and desist letter over infringement of "hot philosophy news"?
oh right

oh right
The new blog seems to have gotten as many hits in 3 months as Leiter Reports gets in 2 days. Impressive!
