Abandoning Hope: Countdown

I again ask the question: At what point should job seekers abandon hope of an APA interview?

It seems to me that any respectable department should have its APA interviews scheduled by Wednesday.  I'd think that those that have not already set their appointments should be making calls on Monday and Tuesday.  So if you have not heard from your dream department by Tuesday evening, begin reconciling yourself to the fact that they're just not that into you.

A few years ago I got a call on Dec 23 at 10:30pm. My wife and I thought the same thing when the phone rang: "who the fuck is calling this late at night?" (Yes, we aren't very cool.)

Several places I applied to are not even interviewing at the APA and don't plan on having a short list until January. So, this year, it's a bit different. The APA has less dominance over the job market now. But I agree that if you don't hear early this week, you can give up on APA interviews. Given the prevalence of Skype interviewing this year, it wouldn't surprise me if some departments doing interviews in early January were a little later (notifying people this week).

I don't know about this. Tuesday is the 18th, but even back in the [purportedly] good old days I often got interview notices after the 20th!

A colleague of mine scored an APA interview after the 21st last year. He's now enjoying his first year in that tenure-track position, and in a nice locale. But that's the exception, not the rule...

I use the Aztec calender. December 21, 2012, is 4-Xochitl, 1-Ollin, 1-Calli. It will be a good day for companionship, reflection and self-purification.
